Issue description

A communication system error indicating a data transfer issue on the CAN Bus network. The module logging the code is intermittently or entirely failing to receive required messages (such as speed or status updates) from the CCU within the expected time-out period. The underlying condition is typically an open circuit, a short circuit, a loose wire, or faulty CAN Bus terminating resistors.

Check the cause

  1. Check Fuses: Power loss to the CCU or the CAN network is a primary cause. For ICU-logged codes, check Fuse F6 (for IVT transmissions) and Fuse F35 (for PowrQuad Plus transmissions).

  2. Inspect the Battery and Alternator: Visually inspect around the batteries and alternator for any signs of damage, accumulated debris, or low voltage, which can disrupt CAN communication.

  3. Check Communication Lines: Inspect the wiring harness between the Dash Module (ICU) and the CCU for physical damage, loose pins, or interference.

  4. Test CAN Bus Terminating Resistors: A failed terminating resistor will cause signal reflection and drop CAN messages. Test the network resistance (should be roughly 60 ohms with the battery disconnected).

  5. Verify Software: Ensure both the ICU and CCU are running the latest software versions, as version mismatches can cause communication timeouts.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during testing.

  2. Fuse Replacement

    Locate the fuse panel and test fuses F6, F35, and the main CCU/ICU power fuses. Replace any blown fuses and retest.

  3. Harness Inspection & Repair

    Trace the CAN Bus lines (yellow and green twisted pair wires) between the ICU (Dash) and the CCU. Disconnect the harness connectors at both modules, spray with electrical contact cleaner, check for pushed-back pins, and reconnect securely.

  4. Terminator Replacement

    If the CAN network resistance is out of spec (e.g., 120 ohms instead of 60 ohms), locate and replace the faulty CAN Bus terminating resistor.

  5. Restart and Clear

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key switch to the RUN position, and restart the engine. If the code was caused by a temporary voltage drop or loose connection, it should move from 'Active' to 'Stored'.

  6. Module Replacement/Calibration

    If the wiring and resistors are intact but the code returns immediately, the CCU or ICU may have an internal hardware failure requiring replacement and reprogramming by a John Deere dealer.
