John Deere 2071.09 – PL1: Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Information from CCU Control Software

Issue description

A data transfer issue between the Central Control Unit (CCU) and the reporting module, indicating that the reception of one, several, or all of the CAN messages transmitted by the CCU is intermittent or non-existent.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect all Drive Train CAN Bus wiring between the CCU and the PL1 module for damage, loose connections, or corrosion

  2. Verify the integrity of the CAN Bus terminating resistors

  3. Inspect the fuses that supply power to the transmission control units and the CCU (e.g., F6, F24, F28, and F35)

  4. Monitor Drive Train CAN Bus communication (1000 kBd) using a diagnostic tool to identify the exact source of the data drop

Repair steps

  1. Power down and secure vehicle

Power down the tractor and engage the parking brake.

  2. Locate modules

Locate the Central Control Unit (CCU) and the PL1 Gear Shift Module.

  3. Inspect connectors

Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at both modules. Visually inspect for pushed-back pins, moisture, or corrosion. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Test CAN Bus continuity

Using a multimeter, test the CAN Bus lines for continuity between the CCU and PL1. Repair any open or shorted wires in the harness.

  5. Test terminating resistors

Test the CAN Bus terminating resistors (resistance across CAN High and CAN Low should typically read around 60 ohms with the battery disconnected). Replace if out of specification.

  6. Inspect fuses

Inspect and replace any blown fuses related to the transmission or CCU.

  7. Reconnect and test

Reconnect all modules, restart the vehicle, and check if the code clears.

  8. Consult dealer for module fault

If the code returns immediately, the PL1 module or CCU may have an internal hardware fault or require a software flash/update. At this stage, consult a John Deere dealer for module programming or replacement.
