John Deere 2139.09 – ATC: CSM Message Missing

Issue description

A control unit on the machine's CAN bus network has failed to receive expected data/messages from the Cab Switch Module (CSM). This indicates a communication breakdown, faulty wiring, or a failed CSM.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Multiple Codes: Use Service ADVISOR or the corner post display to see if other modules (PDU, SCC, HCC) are also logging 2139.09 to isolate the fault to the CSM or its main CAN bus connection.

  2. Inspect CSM Power & Ground: Verify the power supply to the CSM and check for related codes like CSM 523746.04 (Wake-up Output Voltage Low).

  3. Inspect CAN Bus Wiring: Check the wiring harness and connectors between the CSM and the main CAN bus hub for loose, damaged, or corroded pins.

  4. Test CAN Resistance: With the machine off and batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the CSM connector (should read approximately 60 ohms).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the CSM

Remove the interior cab trim/panels required to access the Cab Switch Module (typically integrated into the CommandARM or right-hand console).

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

Unplug the harness from the CSM. Thoroughly inspect the connector for pushed-back pins, moisture, or corrosion. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Test Circuits

If the connector is clean, use a multimeter to verify that the CSM is receiving switched power, unswitched power, and a solid ground.

  5. Replace the Module

If power, ground, and CAN continuity are all verified as good, the CSM has failed internally. Remove the mounting screws, extract the old CSM, and install the replacement unit.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

Reconnect the harness, reinstall the cab trim, and reconnect the batteries. Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to clear the stored 002139.09 codes across all modules and perform any necessary software configuration/calibration for the new CSM.
