John Deere 2139.09 – PTF: CSM Message Missing
Issue description
Indicates a data transfer problem where the module logging the code (PTF) has failed to receive the required CAN BUS messages from the Cab Switch Module (CSM). This is typically caused by a communication breakdown, faulty CAN network wiring, a loose connection, or a malfunctioning CSM.

Check the cause
Verify CSM Functionality: Check if the Cab Switch Module (CSM) is powering on and if other switch-related functions in the cab are degraded or missing.
Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other CAN BUS communication codes (e.g., codes ending in .09 from other modules) which would indicate a network-wide CAN failure rather than an isolated PTF-to-CSM issue.
Inspect Wiring and Connections: Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the CSM (in the cab) and the PTF (front chassis) for chafing, corrosion, or loose connector pins.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during harness inspection.
Clean and Reseat Connectors
Locate the Cab Switch Module (CSM) and the Front Chassis Module (PTF). Unplug their main harness connectors, inspect for pushed-out pins or corrosion, clean with contact cleaner, and securely reseat them.
Test CAN Bus Continuity
Use a multimeter to check the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins on the diagnostic port or harness. A healthy CAN network should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms or higher, there is an open circuit or a missing terminating resistor in the harness.
Repair Wiring
If a break or high resistance is found in the harness between the cab and the front chassis, repair or replace the affected wiring section.
Replace the CSM
If the wiring is fully intact, terminating resistance is correct, and the PTF still cannot see the CSM on the network, the Cab Switch Module itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, clear the stored fault codes, and verify that 002139.09 does not return.
