Check the cause
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the AIC (Armrest Interface Control) and the reporting module for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections.
Use a multimeter to test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for continuity and ensure they are not shorted to ground or to each other.
With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN bus network. It should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one terminating resistor is faulty or disconnected. If it reads 0 ohms, there is a short.
Ensure the Armrest Interface Control module is receiving proper supply voltage and has a clean ground connection. A dead module cannot broadcast messages.
Check if there are pending software updates for the AIC or the reporting module via John Deere Service ADVISOR.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access modules
Locate the AIC module (typically inside the cab armrest assembly) and the reporting module (e.g., the BLC or HCC).
Repair harness
If diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or corroded connector pins, repair the affected sections of the harness using John Deere approved weather-pack connectors and wiring.
Replace terminating resistor
If the CAN bus resistance was incorrect (not 60 ohms), locate the faulty CAN terminating resistor (often found at the ends of the CAN backbone) and replace it.
Replace AIC module
If the wiring and resistors are perfectly intact and the AIC has verified power/ground but still fails to communicate, the AIC module itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced.
Reassemble and calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to clear the stored 002140.09 fault code. If a new AIC was installed, it may require flashing/calibration to the machine's specific configuration.
Perform operational test
Start the machine and test all armrest-controlled functions to ensure the CAN bus is communicating properly and the code does not return.
