Check the cause

  1. Power Cycle: Cycle the key switch to see if the code is active or stored, as intermittent voltage drops can cause temporary CAN dropouts.

  2. Power and Ground Verification: Check the fuses supplying the AIC (Armrest) or SSM (Sealed Switch Module) to ensure the module has power and a good ground.

  3. Wiring and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness connecting the AIC/SSM to the main cab harness for loose, damaged, or corroded pins, especially in areas exposed to moisture or repetitive movement like the armrest pivot.

  4. CAN Bus Integrity Test: With the batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN network should read approximately 60 ohms.

  5. Check for Interference: Ensure there are no sources of electrical interference disrupting the CAN Bus communication and that the CAN shielding is intact.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Faulty Node

    Determine if your machine utilizes an AIC (Tractors) or an SSM (Construction).

  2. Access the Module

    For AIC: Remove the covers on the right-hand armrest console to access the Armrest Interface Control board and harness. For SSM: Remove the mounting hardware for the keypad/sealed switch module (usually located on the right-hand console or under the monitor).

  3. Disconnect and Clean

    Unplug the main connector to the module. Use electrical contact cleaner to clean the pins. Check for pushed-back pins in the connector housing. Apply dielectric grease and reconnect to see if the code clears.

  4. Test Harness Continuity

    If the code remains, use a multimeter to perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the module's connector back to the reporting controller (EIC/FLC/CLC). Repair any open circuits or shorts to ground.

  5. Replace the Module

    If the wiring harness, power, and ground are all verified as good, the internal CAN transceiver in the AIC or SSM has likely failed. Replace the module.

  6. Software Calibration

    Install the new module. Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to clear the stored 002140.09 code and push any necessary software updates or payload configurations to the new module.
