John Deere 2140.09 – PTF: Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Information from AIC Control Software

Issue description

Data transfer problem on the Controller Area Network (CAN Bus) where the reporting module is not receiving the expected communication messages from the AIC (Armrest Interface Control / Cab Module).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect CAN Bus Wiring: Check the wiring harness between the AIC (in the cab armrest) and the PTF (front chassis) for signs of chafing, damage, loose connections, or corrosion.

  2. Check for Open/Short Circuits: Use a multimeter to test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for continuity. Ensure the wires are not shorted to ground or to each other.

  3. Verify CAN Bus Terminating Resistors: Disconnect the battery and measure the resistance across the CAN pins at the diagnostic connector. A healthy CAN network should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one terminating resistor is faulty or there is an open circuit.

  4. Check AIC Power and Ground: Ensure the Armrest Interface Control unit is receiving proper supply voltage (check cab load center fuses) and has a clean ground connection. If the AIC has no power, it cannot broadcast on the CAN bus.

  5. Check for Multiple Codes: If multiple modules (e.g., PTF, CLC, SCO) are all logging 002140.09 simultaneously, the issue is almost certainly the AIC module or the main CAN backbone leaving the cab.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Modules

    Locate the AIC module inside the cab's armrest console and the PTF module on the front chassis.

  3. Inspect and Clean Connectors

    Disconnect the harness connectors at both the AIC and PTF. Inspect the pins for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the multimeter continuity test revealed an open or short in the CAN lines, trace the harness (especially at pivot points or where it exits the cab) and splice/repair the damaged CAN wires using OEM-approved twisted-pair repair methods.

  5. Replace Faulty Components

    If the wiring, fuses, and terminating resistors are perfectly intact, the AIC module has likely failed internally and is no longer communicating. Replace the AIC module.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

    Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Connect the John Deere Service ADVISOR diagnostic tool. Clear the stored 002140.09 codes. If a new AIC was installed, it may require software flashing/calibration via Service ADVISOR to pair with the tractor's CCU.

  7. Test

    Cycle the key and perform a functional test of the armrest controls and front PTO/chassis functions to ensure the code does not return.
