Issue description

A standard J1939 CAN communication error indicating a data transfer problem where the module logging the code has lost communication with or is receiving missing/incorrect CAN messages from Source Address 140 (typically the AIC or SSM).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect CAN Bus Wiring and Connections: Check for loose, damaged, chafed, or corroded wires and connectors between the Front Chassis Module (SCO) and the Armrest/Sealed Switch Module.

  2. Check Power and Ground: Verify that the SCO and the AIC/SSM are receiving proper ignition supply voltage and have clean grounds. Low voltage or a dropping ignition supply can cause modules to fall off the CAN network.

  3. Verify Communication: Use a John Deere Service ADVISOR diagnostic tool to monitor CAN Bus messages and see if the module at Source Address 140 is communicating on the network at all.

  4. Check for Interference: Identify and eliminate sources of electrical interference that may disrupt CAN Bus communication. Ensure proper shielding of CAN Bus cables.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the battery before unplugging control modules to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Locate the Front Chassis Module (SCO) and the Armrest Interface Control (AIC) / Sealed Switch Module (SSM). Unplug the harness connectors, spray them with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner, check for pushed-out pins, and securely reconnect them.

  3. Repair Harness

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, short to ground, or short to power in the CAN High or CAN Low lines, repair the harness using OEM-approved splicing methods.

  4. Update Software

    Install any available software updates or patches for the SCO and the communicating control software, as software glitches can sometimes cause false communication timeouts.

  5. Replace Module

    If the wiring, terminating resistors, and power/ground circuits all test perfectly but the fault remains active, the fault lies internally within the module. You will need to replace either the Front Chassis Module (SCO) or the module at Source Address 140 (AIC/SSM), depending on which one is failing to send/receive the handshake.
