John Deere 2140.09 – TID (Direct Drive Gear Shift Module): Incorrect CAN BUS Message / Message Missing

Issue description

The control module has lost communication or is receiving intermittent/incorrect data from the AIC (Armrest Interface Control) Control Software (Source Address 140). The underlying condition is a data transfer failure on the CAN bus network, which is typically caused by an open circuit, a short circuit, faulty CAN bus terminating resistors, or a software glitch. The control software may limit or completely disable transmission shifting functions, leading to reduced vehicle performance.

Check the cause

  1. CAN Bus Resistance Test: With the machine off, measure the resistance across the CAN differential pair (Pins C and D on the diagnostic connector). A healthy CAN backbone should read exactly 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one of the CAN bus terminating resistors has failed or there is an open circuit. If it reads near 0 ohms, there is a short circuit in the wiring.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Physically examine the CAN bus wiring harness between the TID (Gear Shift Module) and the AIC (Armrest Interface Control) for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Check for Interference: Ensure proper grounding and shielding of the CAN bus cables, as electrical interference can disrupt the signal.

  4. Software Verification: Check if there are any pending software updates or patches for the TID or AIC control software, as outdated software can cause communication drops.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the resistance test or visual inspection revealed a short or open circuit, repair or replace the damaged section of the CAN bus wiring harness. Ensure all connector pins are seated securely.

  3. Replace Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN bus resistance was 120 ohms, locate the faulty CAN bus terminating resistor (often located in the roof panel or behind the instrument panel, depending on the cab configuration) and replace it.

  4. Update Software

    Reconnect the battery, connect a diagnostic tool (such as John Deere Service ADVISOR), and flash the TID and AIC modules to the latest software versions.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Clear the stored 002140.09 fault code. Start the tractor and operate the Direct Drive transmission through its gears to verify that the CAN communication has been restored and the code does not return.

  6. Module Replacement (Last Resort)

    If wiring, resistors, and software are all verified good but the code persists, the internal CAN transceiver in either the TID (Gear Shift Module) or the AIC (Armrest Interface Control) has failed. Replace the faulty module and calibrate it using the diagnostic tool.
