John Deere 2141.09 – VCU or TCU: CAN Communication Lost for SSM
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the main controller has lost Controller Area Network (CAN) communication with the Sealed Switch Module (SSM). The SSM is the push-button interface panel in the cab used by the operator to control various machine functions. When this code triggers, the main computer is no longer receiving data updates from this panel.

Check the cause
Power Cycle: Turn the machine off and back on to see if the communication recovers or if the code is a hard fault.
Wiring Inspection: Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting to the SSM for physical damage, chafing, or loose connections.
Connector Check: Disconnect the SSM and check for pushed-out pins, moisture, or corrosion inside the connector.
Circuit Testing: Use a multimeter to verify that the SSM is receiving proper power and ground. Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for open circuits or short circuits back to the VCU/TCU.
Resistor Check: Verify that the CAN bus terminating resistors are in good condition and reading the correct resistance (typically 60 ohms across the network).
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Access the SSM
Locate the Sealed Switch Module in the cab (often mounted on the right-side cab post or side console).
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, repair the harness using John Deere approved wiring repair kits. Re-test communication.
Replace the SSM
If power, ground, and CAN continuity are verified but the module still will not communicate, the SSM has failed internally. Remove the mounting screws/hardware securing the old SSM, disconnect the wiring harness, plug the harness into the new OEM Sealed Switch Module, and secure it to the mount.
System Verification
Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. Access the primary machine monitor to verify the SSM software version is recognized by the TCU/VCU and ensure the 002141.09 fault code has moved from 'Active' to 'Stored'. Clear the stored codes.
