Issue description

There is a data transfer problem on the CAN bus network. The reporting module is experiencing intermittent or non-existent reception of CAN messages transmitted by the FCC (Front Chassis Control) module, indicating a physical problem in the CAN bus wiring, electrical interference, or a software/hardware failure within the FCC.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle power to the tractor to see if the communication error is a temporary glitch

  2. Inspect CAN bus connections between the reporting module (e.g., BLC) and the FCC control module for signs of damage, loose pins, or corrosion

  3. Inspect the wiring harness for any signs of wear, chafing, or damage that could short or open the CAN lines

  4. Ensure proper grounding and shielding of the CAN Bus cables, as interference can disrupt communication

  5. Use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR or Jaltest) to monitor CAN Bus messages and test the network for data transfer issues

  6. Verify if there are any available software updates or patches for the FCC and the reporting module

Repair steps

  1. Reboot and Clear

    Turn off the machine, wait for the modules to power down completely, and restart. If the code is inactive, clear it and test operate the machine.

  2. Harness Inspection & Repair

    Access the FCC and the reporting module (e.g., BLC). Disconnect the harness connectors and inspect for pushed-out pins, moisture, or corrosion. Clean the contacts and securely reconnect them.

  3. Continuity Testing

    Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the FCC and the reporting module. Repair or replace the wiring harness if an open or short circuit is found.

  4. Grounding Check

    Ensure all ground connections for the FCC and the reporting module are clean and tight.

  5. Software Update

    Connect Service ADVISOR and flash the control software for both the FCC and the reporting module to the latest versions to address any CAN message processing bugs.

  6. Module Replacement

    If the wiring is verified good, grounds are solid, and software is up to date but the code persists, the FCC module has likely suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
