Issue description

A communication breakdown on the vehicle's CAN bus network, preventing other modules from receiving necessary operational data from the front console/dash (FCC). The expected CAN bus messages from the FCC are either intermittent or completely missing.

Check the cause

  1. Power cycle the machine by turning off the key switch to see if the intermittent CAN bus glitch clears

  2. Check for accompanying fault codes, specifically FCC codes (e.g., FCC 000639.14) or voltage codes (e.g., CLC 000158.01) that indicate low voltage or bad grounds

  3. Visually inspect the CAN Bus wiring harness between the CLC and the FCC for chafing, loose wires, or corrosion

  4. Perform a CAN Bus resistance test across the CAN High (Yellow) and CAN Low (Green) wires with batteries disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms)

  5. Verify communication using John Deere Service ADVISOR to monitor CAN Bus traffic and check if the FCC is broadcasting

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Locate the Front Console Control Unit (FCC) and the Cab Load Center (CLC). Unplug the harness connectors at both modules. Treat the pins with electrical contact cleaner, ensure no pins are bent or pushed back into the plastic housing, and firmly reconnect them.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the CAN bus resistance test failed (e.g., reading 120 ohms or an open circuit), trace the yellow and green CAN wires between the FCC and the CLC. Repair any broken wires or replace the damaged harness section.

  4. Eliminate Interference

    Ensure all CAN bus cables are properly shielded and grounded, and route them away from high-current power wires that could cause electromagnetic interference.

  5. Update Software

    If the wiring is intact, connect Service ADVISOR and install any available firmware/software updates for both the FCC and the CLC, as software bugs can cause abnormal update rates.

  6. Replace Faulty Module

    If the FCC remains unresponsive to Service ADVISOR and the wiring is verified good, the FCC module has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced. (If the FCC is communicating fine with the rest of the tractor but the CLC still logs the code, the CLC may be the culprit).
