John Deere 2145.09 – PTQ: Incorrect CAN BUS Message, Information from FCC Control Software

Issue description

There is a data transfer problem on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus between the FCC (Front Console Control) software and the receiving module. The reception of one, several, or all CAN messages transmitted by the FCC is intermittent or non-existent.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect CAN Bus Connections: Check all CAN bus connectors between the FCC and PTQ control units. Look for signs of physical damage, loose connections, pushed-back pins, or corrosion.

  2. Verify System Voltage: Ensure the tractor's battery and charging system are supplying adequate voltage (above 9V).

  3. Test CAN Bus Network Integrity: With the battery disconnected, use a multimeter to check the CAN bus terminating resistors. You should read approximately 60 ohms across the CAN High and CAN Low pins.

  4. Verify Wiring Harness: Inspect the main chassis wiring harness for signs of chafing, wear, or rodent damage, particularly where the harness routes between the cab (FCC) and the transmission/rear chassis (PTQ).

  5. Check for Electrical Interference: Ensure there are no aftermarket electronics or damaged components introducing electromagnetic interference near the CAN bus network.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access the Modules

    Locate the FCC (typically in the front console/steering column area) and the PTQ module (typically mounted near the transmission or rear chassis).

  3. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at both the FCC and PTQ modules. Apply a high-quality electrical contact cleaner to the pins. Carefully reseat the connectors, ensuring the locking tabs click into place.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the continuity test during diagnosis revealed an open or shorted CAN High/CAN Low wire, locate the break in the harness. Splice and solder the damaged wires, sealing them with dual-wall heat shrink tubing to prevent moisture ingress.

  5. Reconnect Power

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  6. Software Update

    Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR. Check for and apply any available software updates for both the FCC and PTQ modules. Software updates frequently patch CAN message processing bugs that trigger false 002145.09 codes.

  7. Clear and Test

    Clear the stored diagnostic trouble codes. Start the tractor, cycle the forward/reverse drive lever, and test drive the machine to verify the code does not return.
