John Deere 2149.06 – Vehicle Load Center (VLC): VLC Circuit Current High
Issue description
The Vehicle Load Center (VLC) control unit has detected that the total electrical current (amperage) draw across its circuits is excessively high. This is typically caused by a short circuit, a mechanical fault in a driven component, or the installation of aftermarket electrical accessories that exceed the module's rated output capacity.

Check the cause
Isolate Aftermarket Accessories: Identify any customized accessories wired into the tractor's electrical system (e.g., aftermarket flood lights, hazard lights, heavy-duty window wipers, or implement monitors).
Visual Wiring Inspection: Examine the wiring and connectors connected to the VLC for signs of short circuits, such as melted insulation, chafing against the chassis, or exposed wires.
Power Cycle: Turn the tractor off, place it in park, and restart the engine to verify if the code is still active.
Repair steps
Disconnect Accessories
Completely disconnect all operator-customized electrical accessories from the tractor's load center.
Clear and Retest
Cycle the key switch to clear the code. If the code does not return, the aftermarket accessories were drawing excessive current. You will need to wire them through an independent relay directly to the battery rather than through the VLC.
Measure Circuit Current
If the code persists with accessories removed, use a multimeter to measure the current draw on individual circuits managed by the VLC to isolate the specific circuit causing the overload.
Repair Wiring/Components
Once the overloaded circuit is identified, trace the harness to look for shorts to ground. Repair or replace any damaged wiring or connectors. If the circuit drives a specific component (like an A/C clutch or wiper motor), test that component for internal mechanical faults causing high resistance.
Module Replacement
If all wiring and components test within specification and the code remains active, the Vehicle Load Center (VLC) itself may have an internal fault and will require replacement and reprogramming by a John Deere dealer.
