John Deere 2163.09 – SCC: SV III Message Missing / CAN BUS Message Fault SCV 3

Issue description

This error code indicates that the Selective Control Unit (SCC) is not receiving the required CAN bus messages from Selective Control Valve III (SV III). When this code is detected, the SCC will disable its functions (turning them off) to prevent further issues or erratic hydraulic behavior.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect SV III Unit for secondary error codes specifically logged by SV III

  2. Check unswitched supply voltage to SV III (must be above 9.0 V) to ensure the controller hasn't dropped off the CAN bus due to low voltage

  3. Inspect all wiring and connectors between the SCC and SV III for signs of damage, corrosion, or poor pin fitment

  4. Test the CAN bus network for proper communication and verify termination resistance using a multimeter or diagnostic tool

  5. Ensure both the SV III and SCC have the latest firmware and software updates installed

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Visual Inspection

Locate the SCV III stack at the rear of the machine (identified by the brown coupler cover). Disconnect the electrical harness going to the SCV III Electronic Control Unit.

  3. Harness Repair

If corrosion, damaged pins, or broken wires are found in the harness, repair or replace the affected wiring harness section.

  4. Test CAN Link

Reconnect the battery and use a diagnostic tool to monitor CAN messages from the SCV III to the SCC. Ensure messages are being received without faults.

  5. Replace SCV ECU

If the wiring and CAN bus are intact and power/ground are verified, the SV III Electronic Control Unit (or the entire SCV assembly) is likely malfunctioning and must be replaced.

  6. Calibration

After replacing the SCV or its ECU, use John Deere Service ADVISOR to calibrate the new Selective Control Valve and clear the stored 002163.09 fault code.
