John Deere 2166.09 – PL2 or SCC: Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Information from PL1 Control Software / SV VI Message Missing
Issue description
There is a data transfer problem on the CAN Bus network where the reception of messages sent on the CAN bus by the PL1 control software is intermittent, incorrect, or entirely non-existent.

Check the cause
Check for other active error codes first, especially codes indicating low ignition supply to the Gear Shift Module (e.g., 000158.03).
Verify all CAN Bus connections to the PL1 and PL2 modules are secure and free of damage.
Inspect CAN Bus traffic using John Deere Service ADVISOR for excessive errors, interference, or a high error rate.
Inspect the PL1 control unit for hardware faults or power supply drops that may be contributing to the communication loss.
Ensure the control software on the modules is up-to-date to minimize communication errors.
Repair steps
Read and Document Codes
Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR and read all stored and active codes. Address any power supply or ground codes related to the PL1 module first, as a module without power cannot broadcast CAN messages.
Inspect the Wiring Harness
Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the PL1 (Gear Shift Module) to the main CAN bus. Look for chafing, melted wires, or corrosion at the connectors.
Clean and Reseat Connectors
Disconnect the connectors at the PL1 module. Clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner, check for bent or pushed-back pins, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect them.
Perform Continuity Testing
Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the PL1 module and the reporting module (PL2 or SCC). Repair any open circuits or shorts to ground.
Replace the Module
If the wiring is completely intact, CAN bus traffic is otherwise healthy, and power/ground to the PL1 module are verified, the PL1 module itself has likely suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
Clear and Test
After repairing the wiring or replacing the module, clear the codes and test drive the tractor to verify the DirectDrive transmission shifts correctly and the code does not return.
