John Deere 2166.09 – SCC: SV VI Message Missing
Issue description
Loss of CAN bus communication. The controller is not receiving the required operational messages from Selective Control Valve 6 (SCV 6). The controller typically disables the affected hydraulic functions to prevent erratic operation or further issues.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying codes logged by the SV VI unit itself (if multiple SCVs drop out simultaneously, it is almost certainly a shared power or ground issue rather than a failed valve)
Disconnect the harness at SCV 6 and check for 12V power and a solid ground
Inspect the SCV 6 connector, the intermediate frame connectors, and the middle connector at the Rear Chassis Controller (SCC) for pushed-out pins, moisture intrusion, or corrosion
Measure the resistance of the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the SCV 6 connector and the SCC to ensure the communication link is intact
Ensure both the SCC and the SCV have the latest firmware updates applied via John Deere Service ADVISOR
Repair steps
Access the Valve Block
Locate the rear hydraulic SCV stack. Identify SCV 6 (usually the top or outermost valve depending on the stack configuration).
Harness Repair
If power/ground/CAN is missing: Trace the wiring harness from the SCV back to the frame connector. If a break or high resistance is found, repair the damaged wire or replace the rear chassis harness section. Note: Technicians sometimes temporarily jump power/ground from an unused SCV connector to the dead SCV to finish a job while waiting for a harness.
Replace the SCV
If wiring is verified good: Relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system. Clean the area around the SCV stack thoroughly to prevent contamination. Disconnect the electrical connector and hydraulic lines to SCV 6. Unbolt the SCV 6 slice from the valve stack (usually held by tie bolts). Install the new SCV slice using new O-rings between the valve sections. Torque the tie bolts to OEM specifications to prevent leaks or spool binding.
Calibration
Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR, clear the 002166.09 code, and perform the SCV calibration procedure so the SCC recognizes the new valve.
Parts you might need
(3)Selective Control Valve (SCV) Assembly
RE536278Varies by model (must be verified against the specific tractor's serial number). Ensure you order the correct slice (e.g., 1/2-inch vs 3/4-inch couplers) and flow rating.
SCV O-Ring Seal Kit
Required if separating the valve stack to replace a single SCV slice.
Rear Chassis Wiring Harness
Replace if the CAN wires or power feeds are internally broken and cannot be pinned out.
