John Deere 2167.09 – PL4: Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Information from PL2 Control Software

Issue description

There is a data transfer problem between the PL4 control software and the PL2 control software. The reception of messages sent on the CAN Bus by the PL2 module is intermittent or non-existent, typically pointing to an open circuit, a short circuit, or faulty CAN bus terminating resistors.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness connecting the PL2 and PL4 modules for chafing, pinch points, melted insulation, or disconnected plugs.

  2. Disconnect the harnesses at the PL2 and PL4 modules and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or push-out.

  3. Use a digital multimeter to test for continuity on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the PL2 and PL4 connectors, verifying there is no short to ground or short to power.

  4. Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins to verify CAN Bus terminators; it should read approximately 60 ohms.

  5. Ensure that both the PL2 and PL4 control modules are flashed with the latest software versions via John Deere Service Advisor.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Clean Connections

    If corrosion was found during the diagnostic checks, use a high-quality electrical contact cleaner on the PL2 and PL4 module pins. Apply dielectric grease to the connector seals (not directly on the pins) to prevent future moisture intrusion.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If an open or short circuit was found in the CAN High or CAN Low wires, splice in a new section of wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the damaged section of the transmission wiring harness.

  4. Replace Terminating Resistor

    If the CAN bus resistance was out of spec (e.g., 120 ohms instead of 60 ohms) and wiring is intact, locate and replace the faulty CAN bus terminating resistor on that network segment.

  5. Module Replacement

    If the wiring, terminators, and software are all verified as good, the PL2 module is likely failing to broadcast its messages. Replace the PL2 module.

  6. Reassembly and Calibration

    Reconnect the battery. Connect the tractor to John Deere Service Advisor, clear the stored PL4 002167.09 fault code, and perform any required transmission calibrations for the DirectDrive system.

  7. Test Drive

    Operate the tractor, shifting through the DirectDrive ranges to ensure the park lock solenoids engage/disengage properly and the code does not return.
