John Deere 2168.09 – PL1: Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Information from PL3 Control Software

There is a data transfer problem between the logging module (PL1) and the PL3 control software. The reception of messages sent on the CAN Bus by the PL3 control software is either intermittent or completely non-existent.

   Verify CAN Bus Connections: Inspect the wiring harness connecting the PL1 and PL3 control units. Look for chafing, breaks, or loose/corroded connector pins.

   Test CAN Bus Terminators: With the tractor off and the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms).

   Inspect CAN Bus Traffic: Use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service Advisor) to monitor the CAN Bus traffic for excessive errors, interference, or a high error rate.

   Check for Hardware/Software Faults: Verify if the PL1 or PL3 modules have physical damage and ensure the control software is fully up-to-date.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during testing.

   Inspect Wiring

   Locate the DirectDrive transmission controllers (PL1 and PL3). Trace the transmission wiring harness between them. Repair any open circuits or short circuits found in the wiring.

   Test and Replace Terminators

   If the CAN bus resistance is reading 120 ohms (meaning one resistor is dead/missing) or out of specification, locate and replace the faulty CAN bus terminator.

   Clean Connections

   Disconnect the harnesses at the PL1 and PL3 modules. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting to ensure a solid connection.

   Software Update

   Reconnect the battery. Connect the John Deere Service Advisor tool and flash the latest software updates to the PL1 and PL3 control units.

   Clear and Retest

   Clear the fault codes. Operate the tractor's DirectDrive transmission (shifting through ranges and engaging the park lock). If the code returns and the wiring/terminators are verified good, the PL3 or PL1 control module itself has an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
