John Deere 2168.09 – SCC: SV VIII Message Missing

Issue description

This is a communication error indicating that the control module is not receiving the expected CAN bus data messages from the Selective Control Valve 8 (SCV 8 / SV VIII) electronic control unit. This is typically caused by a wiring issue, a faulty CAN bus terminator, a loss of power/ground to the SCV 8 module, or an internal failure of the SCV 8 electronic control unit itself.

Check the cause

  1. Power cycle the tractor's key switch to see if the communication fault is a temporary glitch that clears upon reboot.

  2. Check for global power codes (e.g., SCC 000158.04 or SCC 000168.04) to verify if the SCC itself has low voltage or a blown fuse, which could cause multiple SCVs to drop offline.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the SCV 8 valve slice at the rear hydraulic stack for pinched wires, rubbed-through insulation, or debris/moisture inside the connector.

  4. Using a multimeter, verify that the SCV 8 module is receiving proper unswitched/switched supply voltage and has a clean ground.

  5. Test the CAN High and CAN Low pins for continuity back to the SCC and ensure there are no shorts to ground or power.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate Power

Turn off the tractor and engage the battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the SCV Stack

Locate the SCV 8 valve slice at the rear hydraulic stack.

  3. Disconnect and Clean

Unplug the electrical harness connector at the SCV 8 Electronic Control Unit. Inspect for pushed-out pins or corrosion. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken CAN wire or power wire, repair the harness using OEM-approved splicing methods or replace the SCV wiring harness section.

  5. Replace the SCV ECU

If wiring, power, and ground are all verified as good, the SCV 8 Electronic Control Unit has failed internally. Unbolt the electronic control unit/pilot valve from the mechanical valve slice and install the replacement unit.

  6. Reassembly and Calibration

Reconnect the harness and restore battery power. Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to clear the SCC 002168.09 fault code. You may need to run an SCV configuration/calibration procedure so the SCC recognizes the new SCV 8 module on the CAN bus network.

Parts you might need

(8)
  • Selective Control Valve (SCV) Electronic Control Unit / Pilot Valve

    RE588373

Common 7R/8R example. This is the electronic 'brain' that bolts to the valve slice and communicates with the SCC.

  • Selective Control Valve (SCV) Electronic Control Unit / Pilot Valve

    RE567655

    Common 7R/8R example.

  • Selective Control Valve (SCV) Electronic Control Unit / Pilot Valve

    RE567604

    Common 7R/8R example.

  • Selective Control Valve (SCV) Electronic Control Unit / Pilot Valve

    RE567656

    Common 7R/8R example.

  • Selective Control Valve (SCV) Electronic Control Unit / Pilot Valve

    RE588372

    Common 7R/8R example.

  • SCV Wiring Harness

    RE343006

Required if the connector or wiring leading to SCV 8 is damaged beyond repair.

  • SCV Seal Kit

    RE582808

Recommended if you are removing the entire valve slice and need to reseal the hydraulic mating surfaces.

  • SCV Seal Kit

    RE186600

Recommended if you are removing the entire valve slice and need to reseal the hydraulic mating surfaces.
