John Deere 2169.09 – PL1 Module: Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Information from PL4 Control Software

There is a data transfer problem between the PL1 control software and the PL4 control software where the reception of messages sent on the CAN bus by the PL4 module is intermittent or non-existent, pointing to a possible open circuit, short circuit, or faulty CAN bus terminators.

   Inspect CAN bus wiring between the PL1 and PL4 modules for visible signs of damage, wear, disconnection, or corrosion

   Test CAN bus continuity using a multimeter to identify any open circuits

   Check for short circuits in the wiring using a multimeter to verify the absence of shorts to ground or power

   Verify that the CAN bus terminators are present and functioning correctly, as faulty terminators are a common cause

   Check that both the PL1 and PL4 control software are up-to-date with the latest versions

   Safety First

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the park lock, turn off the engine, and relieve any hydraulic pressure.

   Access the Harness

   Locate the CAN bus wiring harness that connects the PL1 (Gear Shift Module) and PL4 (Range Module) control units.

   Inspect and Repair Wiring

   Based on your continuity and short-circuit tests, repair or replace any damaged sections of the CAN bus wiring harness. Clean any corroded connector pins.

   Replace Terminators

   If the wiring is intact but communication is still dropping, locate the CAN bus terminators on the network. Replace the terminators, as they are prone to internal failure which disrupts the CAN signal.

   Software Update

   Connect the tractor to John Deere Service Advisor. Flash the PL1 and PL4 modules with the latest software updates to rule out a software-level communication glitch.

   Module Replacement

   If the wiring is perfect, terminators are new, and software is updated, the PL4 or PL1 module itself may have a failed internal CAN transceiver and will require replacement.
