John Deere 2169.09 – SCC (Selective Control Valve Control Unit / Rear Chassis Controller): SV IX Message Missing
Issue description
The SCC (Selective Control Valve Control Unit / Rear Chassis Controller) has lost Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication with the electronic module that controls SCV 9 (Source Address 169).
Applies to these machines
11 machines- 6110R
- 6120R
- 6130R
- 6145R
- 6155R
- 6175R
- 6195R
- 6215R
- 9470RT
- 9520RT
- 9570RT
Check the cause
Cycle the key switch off and back on to see if the communication loss is a hard fault or an intermittent software glitch.
Disconnect the harness at SCV 9 and verify 12V power and a solid ground using a multimeter. If the module loses power or ground, it will stop transmitting CAN messages.
Inspect the SCV 9 electrical connector and harness for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.
With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the SCV 9 connector. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. Check for shorts to ground or power on the CAN lines.
Check for multiple codes. If other SCVs (e.g., SCV 7 or SCV 8) are also reporting 'Message Missing' codes, the issue is likely a damaged main CAN bus harness or a faulty terminating resistor rather than the SCV itself.
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure by cycling the SCV levers/controls.
Access the Valve Stack
Locate the rear SCV valve stack on the rear chassis. Identify SCV 9 (usually the outermost or highest-numbered valve in the block, depending on the machine's configuration).
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the SCV to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during removal.
Disconnect Electrical and Hydraulic Lines
Unplug the CAN/power electrical connector from the SCV 9 module. Disconnect the hydraulic lines attached to the valve and immediately cap all open ports and hoses to prevent contamination.
Remove the SCV
Unbolt the SCV 9 slice from the hydraulic valve stack.
Install the New SCV
Mount the replacement SCV unit to the stack, ensuring all O-rings are properly seated. Torque the mounting bolts to the OEM specification.
Reconnect
Reattach the hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical connector.
Calibration
Power on the tractor. The new SCV module will likely need to be calibrated and assigned its specific network address (Source Address 169) using John Deere Service ADVISOR software so the SCC recognizes it as SCV 9.
Parts you might need
(3)Selective Control Valve (SCV) Unit
OEM Part Number varies heavily by exact tractor model, flow rate, and valve stack configuration. Must be sourced via a John Deere dealer using the machine's specific PIN/Serial Number.
SCV Electrical Connector Pigtail
Generic replacement if the harness connector is corroded.
CAN Bus Terminating Resistor
Generic John Deere CAN resistor, replace if bus resistance is out of spec.
