John Deere 2173.09 – SCO: CAN Bus Message Cannot Be Received, Information from E-SCV XIII

Issue description

A data transfer problem between the SCO control software and the E-SCV XIII (Electronic Selective Control Valve 13). The expected communication over the CAN Bus network is missing or interrupted, pointing to a failure in the CAN Bus wiring, a loose connection, or an internal fault in the transmitting control software/stepper motor. This results in limited or no operation of the selective control valve.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect CAN Bus wiring harnesses routing to the SCO and E-SCV XIII for physical damage, loose connections, pinched wires, or corrosion at the connector pins.

  2. Verify the E-SCV XIII control unit is receiving proper supply voltage (must be above 9 volts).

  3. Test CAN Bus communication using a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) to verify if the SCO module can ping E-SCV XIII.

  4. Perform a wiggle-test on the harnesses while monitoring the CAN Bus status to check for intermittent reception issues.

Repair steps

  1. Secure and Repair Wiring

If any damaged wiring or corroded connectors are found during the inspection, repair the harness or replace the connector pins. Secure any loose connections.

  2. Reboot the System

Restart the tractor's control system to reset the software and clear the code.

  3. Recalibrate the Valve

If the wiring is intact but the code persists, attempt to recalibrate the E-SCV XIII unit via the tractor's command center or diagnostic tool.

  4. Replace the E-SCV / Stepper Motor

If the E-SCV XIII unit fails recalibration, does not communicate, or has an internal stepper motor failure, the E-SCV valve/actuator must be replaced.

  5. Consult Technical Support

If the issue persists after replacing the valve, the SCO module itself may require a software flash or replacement.
