John Deere 2190.09 – PL1: Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Information from PL1 Control Software

Issue description

Data transfer problem on the Power Line Communication System. The reception of messages sent on the CAN bus by the PL1 control software is intermittent or completely non-existent, preventing the modules from coordinating properly.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 640L
  • 648L
  • 748L

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying voltage or communication codes that might isolate a specific wiring branch.

  2. Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring between the PL1 Gear Shift Module and the rest of the PL network for chafing, pinched wires, or loose connector pins.

  3. With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector. A healthy terminated CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one terminator is faulty or disconnected; if it reads out of limits, there is a wiring fault.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing the CAN bus or transmission modules.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the harness inspection reveals an open or short circuit, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the affected pigtail connector.

  3. Replace CAN Terminators

If the resistance test fails and wiring is intact, locate the CAN bus terminators on the harness. Unplug the faulty terminator and plug in a new OEM terminator.

  4. Module Replacement

If the wiring and terminators are perfectly intact, the PL1 Gear Shift Module itself may have suffered an internal failure. Replace the PL1 module and have a John Deere dealer flash/program the new module to the tractor's network.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes via the monitor, and test drive the tractor to ensure the DirectDrive transmission shifts correctly and the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • CAN Bus Terminator (Mini Boot Style - 6-pin)

    RE207311

Also referenced by dealers as 58912. Installed at the end of a CAN bus implement or harness circuit to terminate the network and prevent signal reflections that cause communication errors.

  • Gear Shift Module Direct Drive (PL1)

Specific part number varies heavily by exact tractor serial number and cab configuration; consult a dealer parts catalog using your VIN/PIN.
