Issue description

A data transfer problem occurs on the CAN bus network where the reception of messages sent by the PL4 control software is intermittent or non-existent, indicating a physical communication breakdown such as an open circuit, short circuit, or faulty CAN bus terminators.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the PL2 and PL4 modules for signs of chafing, damage, wear, or disconnection. Ensure all connectors are secure and free of moisture or corrosion.

  2. Use a multimeter to test for continuity in the CAN bus wiring to identify any open circuits.

  3. Use a multimeter to verify the absence of shorts to ground or shorts to power within the CAN lines.

  4. Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins with the battery disconnected. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates a missing/faulty terminator or an open circuit. A reading of 0 ohms indicates a short.

  5. Ensure that both the PL2 and PL4 control software are flashed to the latest versions provided by John Deere.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery before servicing the electrical system to prevent module damage.

  2. Isolate the Fault

    Based on your multimeter readings, locate the break or short in the harness between the PL2 and PL4 modules.

  3. Inspect Connectors

    Disconnect the harness at both modules. Check for pushed-back pins, spread terminals, or corrosion. Clean the contacts with electronic cleaner and apply dielectric grease if necessary.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If a broken wire or short is found in the harness, splice and solder the wire, sealing it with heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section.

  5. Replace Terminators

    If the CAN resistance was 120 ohms and the wiring is intact, locate the CAN bus terminators on the chassis/center-frame harness. Unplug the faulty terminator and plug in the replacement.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all modules and the battery. Connect John Deere Service Advisor (or a compatible diagnostic tool), clear the stored 002193.09 code, and test drive the tractor to ensure the modules are communicating and the code does not return.
