John Deere 2198.09 – CCU: No CAN Message Received From Source Address 198

Issue description

Loss of CAN bus communication between the logging module and the tractor's steering control module.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Logging Module: Confirm whether the code is prefixed with CCU, XMB, TMB, or XSC to know exactly which module is looking for the steering signal.

  2. Check for Global CAN Failure: Look for other .09 communication codes. If multiple modules are reporting missing messages, the entire CAN bus may be down rather than just the steering module.

  3. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the CCU and the Steering Control Unit (XMA/XMC). Look for chafed wires, moisture intrusion, corrosion, or pushed pins at the connectors.

  4. Test Power and Ground: Verify that the Steering Control Unit is receiving proper unswitched and switched supply voltage, as well as a solid ground.

  5. Test CAN Bus Resistance: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across CAN High and CAN Low at the steering module connector. It should read approximately 60 ohms.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the battery ground cable before servicing any CAN bus components or control units.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or corroded connector pins on the CAN bus circuit between the CCU and the Steering Control Unit, repair or replace the affected harness sections.

  3. Replace the Faulty Module

    If wiring, power, and ground are all verified as good, the Steering Control Unit (or less likely, the CCU) has suffered an internal hardware/software failure and must be replaced.

  4. Record Data

    If replacing the CCU, record the engine hours from the old unit before removal so they can be entered into the new unit.

  5. Install the New Unit

    Mount the new control unit and reconnect the electrical harnesses.

  6. Calibrate and Program

    Reconnect the battery. A new CCU or Steering Control Unit will require programming with the correct software payload and calibration using John Deere Service ADVISOR.

  7. Clear and Test

    Clear the stored fault codes and test drive the tractor (including headland steering maneuvers) to verify the communication error does not return.
