John Deere 2198.09 – XSC: No CAN Message Received From Source Address 198
Issue description
A data transfer problem on the CAN Bus network where the receiving module is failing to detect expected communication messages from the transmitting control software (typically the XMC, XMA, or TSA modules).

Check the cause
Cycle the key switch or tractor power to clear temporary CAN communication glitches
Measure battery voltage with a multimeter to ensure it is above 11 volts (low voltage causes modules to drop off the network)
Verify the charging system and alternator are functioning correctly and providing adequate voltage
Inspect all electrical connections between the battery, XSC module, and XMC/XMA modules for tightness, cleanliness, and secure seating
Examine the CAN Bus wiring harness for any signs of chafing, damage, wear, or corrosion
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.
Locate Modules
Locate the XSC and XMC (or XMA/TMB) control modules.
Inspect Pins
Disconnect the harness connectors from the steering modules. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.
Test CAN Bus Integrity
Perform a continuity and resistance test on the CAN Bus wires (CAN High and CAN Low) between the transmitting module (XMC/XMA) and the receiving module (XSC). Repair or replace any damaged sections of the wiring harness.
Reconnect and Retest
Reconnect all modules and the battery, then power on the tractor.
Module Replacement/Reflash
If the wiring is verified good and the code persists, the transmitting module (XMC) or receiving module (XSC) may have an internal software or hardware failure. It will need to be reflashed with updated software or replaced by a dealer.
Recalibration
If a steering module or steering valve is replaced, you must perform a system recalibration (e.g., steering valve calibration, wheel rotational angle sensor calibration) using the John Deere Service ADVISOR tool.
