John Deere 002352.06 – BLC / RLC: Grab Rail Headlight High Amperage

Issue description

The responsible control module (RLC or BLC) has detected excessively high electrical current in the low beam headlight circuit for the grab rail when the headlights are turned on. This condition is typically caused by a faulty bulb, a short circuit to ground in the wiring, or an internal module failure, and may cause the control unit to shut down the circuit to prevent damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check the headlight bulb for internal shorts or broken filaments. Test it for continuity with a multimeter or swap it with the known good bulb from the other headlight

  2. Inspect fuses related to the headlight or lighting circuits for blown fuses. Replace any blown fuse with one of the same amperage rating; if it blows immediately, it confirms a persistent short circuit

  3. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the grab rail headlight for chafing, pinching, melting, or rodent damage that could cause a short to ground, paying close attention to areas where the harness passes through or around metal components

  4. Inspect electrical connectors at the headlight assembly and control module for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins. Clean any corroded terminals and ensure the connector is dry and securely seated upon reconnection

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the circuit

Disconnect the electrical connector at the grab rail headlight assembly. Turn on the headlights and check if the fault code 002352.06 returns. If it does not return, the fault is likely within the headlight assembly (e.g., bulb socket or internal wiring). If it does return, the fault is a short circuit in the wiring harness between the control module and the headlight.

  2. Test for short to ground

With the headlight disconnected and key switch off, use a multimeter set to measure resistance (Ohms). Probe the low beam power wire pin in the headlight connector and a clean, unpainted metal surface on the chassis (ground). A low resistance reading (near zero ohms) confirms the power wire is shorted to ground.

  3. Locate and repair short

If a short to ground is confirmed, carefully inspect the wiring harness along its entire length from the control module to the headlight. Manipulate the harness while observing the multimeter to pinpoint the short. Repair or replace the damaged section of wire, ensuring it is properly insulated and protected from future damage.

  4. Test the control module

If no short circuit is found in the wiring and the bulb is known to be good, the control module (BLC or RLC) may have failed internally. Swap the module with a known good unit for testing (this typically requires a dealer).
