John Deere 237.02 – CCU: VIN Security Data Conflict

Issue description

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or configuration data stored in the Central Control Module does not match the VIN broadcasted by other control units on the machine, triggering a security protocol that degrades or limits machine functionality.

Check the cause

  1. Check for CAN Bus Codes First: Diagnose any other DTCs indicating missing CAN messages, as a broken CAN wire can prevent the CCU from reading the VIN.

  2. Verify VIN Entries: Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to read the VIN entries across all control units to identify which module has mismatched, corrupted, or missing data.

  3. Review Recent Service History: Check if any control units were recently replaced, updated, or swapped from another tractor.

Repair steps

  1. Revert Changes

If the code appeared immediately after a software update or module swap, revert the changes or reinstall the original module if possible.

  2. Reprogram the VIN

Connect the machine to John Deere Service ADVISOR. Recalibrate the control units and reprogram the mismatched module with the correct VIN and tractor configuration data.

  3. Cycle Power

Once the configurations are verified and matching across the CCU, ECU, and ICU, cycle the tractor's key switch to allow the system to re-attempt VIN verification.

  4. Replace the CCU

If the CCU has suffered an internal hardware failure and can no longer retain its stored configuration data, the module itself must be replaced.

  5. Post-Installation Calibration

If a new CCU is installed, a dealer technician must perform a driver calibration and flash the correct VIN security data to the new unit.
