237.02

John Deere 237.02 – Gear Shift Module / Transmission Control Unit: VIN Security Data Conflict

Issue description

Triggered when the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) stored in one control unit does not match the VIN broadcasted by the other primary control units (such as the Engine Control Unit [ECU] or Central Control Unit [CCU]) on the CAN bus, causing the tractor to degrade or limit transmission functionality.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R

Check the cause

  1. Check recent service history to determine if the Transmission Controller, ECU, or CCU was recently replaced, reprogrammed, or swapped from a donor tractor (a swapped module will retain its old VIN and trigger this code)

  2. Check for other active CAN bus communication codes (if the PL1 module cannot communicate properly with the CCU/ECU, it may fail to verify the VIN)

  3. Verify battery and charging system voltage (voltage spikes or severe drops below 9V can cause internal memory/EEPROM read errors in the PL1 software, leading to configuration data loss)

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the John Deere Service Advisor tool to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  2. Read Module Data

Access the controller network and read the VIN stored in the PL1 (Transmission Controller), the ECU, and the CCU to identify which module contains the incorrect or corrupted VIN.

  3. Reprogram the VIN

Use Service Advisor to perform a 'VIN Security' or 'Payload' reprogramming procedure. Write the correct tractor VIN to the PL1 module so that it matches the rest of the system.

  4. Clear Codes and Test

Clear the 000237.02 fault code. Cycle the tractor's key switch, wait for the modules to boot, and verify that the code does not return.

  5. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

If Service Advisor cannot write to the module, or if the module has suffered an internal EEPROM hardware failure, the Transmission Controller must be physically replaced. Once installed, the new blank controller must be flashed with the correct software payload and VIN using Service Advisor.
