237.13

John Deere 237.13 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Module Has Noted An issue With The Stored Tractor Configuration Data / Invalid VIN Option Code Detected

Issue description

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or software version programmed into the Engine Control Unit (ECU) does not match the VIN stored in other machine controllers (such as the EMU or CCU). This mismatch most commonly occurs when a controller is replaced with a used, pre-programmed unit from another machine, or if an incorrect option code was used during a recent software flash.

Check the cause

  1. Check for missing CAN messages and prioritize diagnosing any active DTCs related to CAN bus communication failures, as these can prevent modules from transmitting VINs

  2. Verify recent repairs to determine if the ECU or any other control module was recently replaced with a used, pre-programmed donor unit

  3. Connect John Deere Service Advisor and read VINs across all controllers (ECU, CCU, EMU) to identify which module contains the mismatched data

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the John Deere Service Advisor diagnostic tool to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Verify VIN and option codes

Navigate to the controller programming menu and verify the VIN and option codes currently stored in all relevant control units.

  3. Identify incorrect module

Identify the module with the incorrect VIN or missing payload file.

  4. Reprogram control unit

Reprogram the affected control unit(s) with the correct VIN, option codes, and the latest software payload files specific to the machine in which they are installed.

  5. Perform system reset

After reprogramming, perform a system reset (cycle the key switch).

  6. Verify repair

Verify that all units are in sync, the fault code has cleared, and the engine derate condition is lifted.
