John Deere 237.31 – CCU, OIC, BCU, ECU, ICU / ICC, or ACU: VIN Security Messages Missing / Incorrect VIN Information Detected
Issue description
Triggered when a control unit on the machine's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus fails to receive the programmed Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) security messages from other control units, or receives mismatched data. This is a security and communication safeguard that often results in degraded functionality.

Check the cause
Check for recent repairs to verify if any control modules (CCU, OIC, ECU, etc.) were recently replaced without being programmed with the correct tractor configuration data and VIN.
Inspect CAN network wiring between the control units for physical damage, loose connections, or corrosion.
Check for accompanying diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to CAN bus communication (e.g., high error rates) or module power supply issues, as a module losing power will drop off the network.
Monitor data traffic using a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR or Jaltest) to verify the configuration settings in each module.
Repair steps
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged CAN bus wiring, corroded pins, or unplugged connectors, repair or replace the affected harness sections to restore network communication.
Module Configuration / Reprogramming
If the wiring is intact, connect a dealer-level diagnostic tool to the machine. Verify the configuration settings and perform an End of Line (EOL) programming procedure to ensure all modules are transmitting and receiving the correct VIN security data.
Module Replacement
If a specific module is found to be internally faulted and unable to communicate on the CAN bus despite good wiring and power, replace the faulty module (e.g., the CCU or OIC) and program it with the correct VIN.
Dealer Intervention
Have your John Deere dealer repair as soon as possible, as system resets and VIN security updates typically require authorized dealer software.
