Issue description

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage (should be >12V) and clean the battery terminals, main chassis grounds, and the 250-amp fuse connections to ensure modules do not drop off the CAN bus.

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harnesses and connectors linking the CCU, ECU, and ICU for damaged wiring, corrosion, or loose pins that could interrupt VIN data transmission.

  3. Check for accompanying codes ending in .09 (e.g., 2005.09), which indicate a total loss of CAN communication with a module rather than just a software mismatch.

  4. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to verify the VIN and model configuration recorded in each ECU/CCU, ensuring the data is consistent across the entire network.

Repair steps

  1. Clean Module Contacts

    Disconnect the battery. Locate the CCU (often under the floor mat or behind the cab, depending on the model) and the ECU. Unplug the connectors, clean the contacts with electronic contact cleaner, and securely reconnect them.

  2. Reprogram / Synchronize Modules

    If the wiring is intact, connect the John Deere Service ADVISOR tool. Correct any VIN misconfigurations by flashing/reprogramming the affected control units so they all reflect the exact same vehicle identification number and tractor model data.

  3. Reset the System

    After adjustments, reset the communication systems via the diagnostic tool and conduct a test run to verify that the VIN security messages are being correctly transmitted.

  4. Replace the CCU

    If the CCU fails to hold the configuration data, has an internal hardware fault, or cannot be communicated with, the module itself must be replaced and calibrated by a dealer.
