237.31

John Deere 237.31 – PL1: VIN Information, Incorrect / VIN Security Messages Missing

Issue description

Generated when a control unit fails to receive the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) from other control units on the CAN bus, or when the received VIN/tractor configuration data does not match the data stored in the module's memory. This is a security and configuration mismatch error that can lead to degraded functionality or limited operations.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R

Check the cause

  1. Check for companion codes using a diagnostic display (e.g., CAN bus voltage errors or missing controller codes) to determine if multiple modules are throwing communication errors, indicating a physical wiring fault.

  2. Verify battery voltage is sufficient (at least 12.5V) and check all chassis and cab ground connections, as low voltage or bad grounds can cause modules to drop off the CAN bus.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors linking the PL1 module to the rest of the CAN network for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture.

  4. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to verify the VIN and configuration data programmed into the PL1 module and the master controller (CCU or BCU).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the battery before servicing module connections to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Inspect Wiring

Locate the PL1 Gear Shift Module Direct Drive and disconnect its wiring harness. Inspect the connector pins for damage, moisture, or corrosion. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease if necessary.

  3. Reconnect and Test

Reconnect the module, restore battery power, and check if the code clears.

  4. Reprogram Module

Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR. If the PL1 module was recently replaced, or if it lost its memory due to a voltage drop, perform a module configuration/payload update to write the correct VIN and tractor configuration data to the PL1 module.

  5. Replace Module

If the wiring is intact, the CAN bus is healthy, and the module refuses to accept programming or communicate the VIN, the PL1 module has an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  6. Finalize

Install the new PL1 module, program it with Service ADVISOR to match the tractor's VIN, and clear all active fault codes.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Gear Shift Module Direct Drive (PL1) / PLD Control Unit

Exact part numbers are highly specific to the tractor's exact model and serial number break; consult the John Deere EPC with your specific VIN. This is a blank module from the factory and requires dealer programming (Service ADVISOR) after installation.
