Issue description

This code is triggered when the Cab Load Center (CLC) detects that the electrical current draw on the brake light circuit exceeds its maximum nominal capacity (typically a 12-amp threshold). This indicates an overloaded circuit, an internally shorted bulb, or a short-to-ground in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Isolate the implement: Unplug any trailer or implement from the tractor's rear 7-pin connector (a short circuit in a towed implement's wiring is a highly common cause).

  2. Inspect the bulbs: Check brake light bulbs for blackened glass, melted filaments shorting across the posts, melted plastic sockets, or incorrect excessively high-wattage bulbs.

  3. Cycle the power: Restart the engine to verify if the active Diagnostic Trouble Code reappears, as it can sometimes be triggered by a momentary communication glitch.

  4. Harness inspection: Visually inspect the brake light wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper touching the tractor frame (especially near the rear fenders and cab entry points).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor key switch and disconnect the battery ground to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Test Without Implement

    If a trailer was attached, leave the 7-pin connector unplugged, reconnect the battery, and start the tractor. Apply the brakes. If the code does not return, the fault is in the trailer/implement wiring, not the tractor.

  3. Replace Faulty Bulbs

    Remove the brake light lenses. If any bulbs are blown, internally shorted, or incorrect, replace them with the correct OEM-spec 12V/14V bulbs.

  4. Trace and Repair Wiring

    If the bulbs are fine, trace the wiring harness from the tail/brake light assemblies back to the Cab Load Center (CLC). Look for damaged insulation causing a short-to-ground. Repair any damaged sections using heat-shrink butt connectors and electrical tape.

  5. Check the Brake Light Switch

    If the wiring is intact, inspect the brake light switch (usually located near the brake pedals) for internal shorts or damage.

  6. Clear the Code

    Once repairs are made, restart the tractor. Press the "Select" switch on the CommandCenter display to acknowledge the alert and clear the display. Test the brakes to ensure the code does not return.
