Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the CLC (or VCU) to the backup alarm and backup lights for chafing, melting, or exposed wires that could cause a short to power.

  2. Use a multimeter to test the backup alarm circuit for a short to a power source by checking the voltage at the backup alarm connector while the machine is in reverse.

  3. Disconnect the backup alarm and backup lights to see if the short to power clears. If the code changes to an open circuit or clears, the component itself is internally shorted.

  4. Test the pressure backup alarm switch or mechanical reverse switch for internal shorts or sticking.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Always disconnect the battery or turn off the battery isolator switch before performing electrical repairs to prevent further damage to the CLC/VCU.

  2. Isolate the Short

Based on the multimeter readings, trace the wiring harness back from the alarm to the controller to locate the exact point of the short to power.

  3. Repair Wiring

If a damaged wire is found, repair the section using OEM-approved waterproof splices and heat shrink, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace Components

If the wiring is intact but the backup alarm or switch is internally shorted, remove the faulty component and install a new OEM replacement.

  5. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes from the CLC/VCU, and shift the machine into reverse to verify the backup alarm sounds and the code does not return.
