John Deere 2396.06 – BLC (Basic Lighting Controller / Light Control Unit): Inner Worklights on Front of Roof, Current Too High
Issue description
The control module is detecting an excessive electrical current (high amps) on the circuit that powers the inner worklights mounted on the front of the cab roof. This condition is typically caused by a short to ground (earth) in the wiring, a defective/shorted bulb, or an internal failure in the control module.

Check the cause
Inspect the inner worklights on the front of the roof for physical damage, water intrusion, or melted housings
Remove the bulbs or disconnect the LED assemblies to check if the bulbs are blown, internally shorted, or if an incorrect (higher wattage) bulb was installed
Perform circuit isolation: With the front inner roof worklights disconnected, turn the worklights on. If the fault code changes to 002396.05 (Current Too Low), the fault lies within the bulb or light assembly. If 002396.06 remains active, there is a short to ground in the wiring harness or the BLC module
Trace the wiring harness from the cab roof down to the BLC module, looking for pinched wires, chafing against the cab frame, or melted insulation causing a short to earth
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal before performing electrical repairs.
Address the Short
If the bulb/assembly is faulty: Replace the inner roof worklight bulb or the entire sealed LED assembly. If the wiring is shorted: Repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section. Ensure the harness is routed away from sharp metal edges.
Module Replacement (Worst Case)
If the wiring tests perfectly and the lights are not the issue, the BLC module has failed internally and must be replaced. Note that a new BLC will require control software flashing/calibration via John Deere Service ADVISOR.
Test
Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes in the BLC, and turn on the worklights to verify the high-amp condition has been resolved.
