John Deere 247.19 – CCU (Chassis Control Unit / Main Control Module): Operating Hours Fault

The CCU is expecting to receive the engine's total operating hours over the CAN bus from the Engine Control Unit (ECU), but the message is missing, invalid, or timing out.

   Check for companion codes (such as 000639.12 or 000639.14 - Vehicle CAN Bus High Error Rate) to determine if the entire CAN bus is down rather than just the engine hours message

   Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the machine off and battery disconnected by measuring resistance across the CAN differential pair (Pins C and D on the 9-pin diagnostic connector). A healthy bus reads 60 ohms, 120 ohms indicates a missing resistor or open circuit, and near 0 ohms indicates a short circuit

   Verify Engine Control Unit (ECU) power to ensure it is online and capable of broadcasting the engine hours to the CCU

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the CAN network.

   Inspect Connectors

   Inspect the wiring harness connectors at both the Engine ECU and the CCU. Look for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion, which are common causes of dropped CAN messages.

   Locate and Test Terminating Resistors

   If your resistance test yielded 120 ohms, locate the terminating resistors. Depending on the tractor model, one is usually located in the roof panel (A61) and the second is behind the instrument panel to the right of the steering column (A62). Replace if faulty.

   Repair Wiring

   If the resistance test showed an open or short, trace the twisted-pair CAN wiring between the ECU and CCU. Repair any chafed or broken wires using a CAN bus repair pigtail.

   Software Update

   If the wiring is perfectly intact (60 ohms), connectors are clean, and no other CAN codes are present, the Engine ECU may be failing to broadcast the SPN 247 message due to a software glitch. A John Deere dealer may need to reflash the ECU/CCU software.
