247.31

John Deere 247.31 – CCU: Operating Hours Fault

Issue description

The Chassis Control Unit (CCU) fails to receive the expected CAN Bus messages containing the engine's operating hours from the Engine Control Unit (ECU), or the ECU detects an open circuit in the sensor used to calculate operating hours and sends a replacement value over the CAN bus.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110M
  • 6120M
  • 6130M
  • 6145M
  • 6155M
  • 6175M
  • 6195M
  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 6090MC
  • 6090RC
  • 6100MC
  • 6100RC
  • 6110MC
  • 6110RC

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN bus codes (such as CCU 000247.09 or CCU 000190.09) which indicate a physical wiring failure.

  2. Scan the Engine Control Unit (ECU) for active faults related to the engine speed sensor or other sensors used to calculate hours.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU and CCU for loose wires, pushed-back pins, or moisture.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to read all active and stored DTCs across all modules.

  2. Address ECU Faults First

If the ECU is logging active codes related to engine speed or operating hours calculation, diagnose and repair the ECU-side sensor circuits first. (The CCU code will often clear once the ECU resumes broadcasting valid data).

  3. Inspect the CAN Bus Harness

Locate the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the ECU to the CCU. Disconnect the connectors at both modules.

  4. Check for Physical Damage

Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension. Ensure no wires are chafed or shorting against the tractor chassis.

  5. Test CAN Bus Integrity

Measure the CAN bus terminating resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (it should read approximately 60 ohms). Test the wires for continuity end-to-end.

  6. Repair/Replace

Repair any damaged wiring or replace faulty connector pins.

  7. Clear and Retest

Reconnect all modules, clear the codes using Service ADVISOR, and cycle the key. Verify that the CCU is now successfully receiving the Engine Hours message from the ECU.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Chassis Control Unit (CCU)

OEM Part Number varies by specific tractor model (e.g., AL21xxxx series for 6M/6R tractors).

  • Engine Control Unit (ECU)

OEM Part Number varies by engine tier/model.

  • Engine Speed Sensor / Crankshaft Position Sensor

Required only if the ECU is failing to calculate hours due to a failed sensor.

  • CAN Bus Wiring Repair Kit / Connector Pins

Generic John Deere electrical repair components.
