John Deere 2630.15 – ECU: Charge Air Cooler Outlet Temperature High

Issue description

The engine control unit has detected that the temperature of the air exiting the charge air cooler (intercooler) and entering the intake manifold is higher than the expected specification (typically triggering around 88°C / 190°F). This usually results in limited engine power and a derated state to protect the engine.

Check the cause

  1. Check the exterior of the charge air cooler and radiator for dirt, chaff, or debris (most common cause of restricted airflow)

  2. Verify the engine coolant level is at the 'MAX' line

  3. Check for a low coolant pump air-lock, which causes low coolant flow through the Low-Temperature Cooling (LTC) circuit to the charge air cooler

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connector to the Charge Air Cooler Outlet Temperature Sensor for shorts, corrosion, or open circuits

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Cooling Package

    Thoroughly blow out or wash the radiator and charge air cooler fins to remove any blockages.

  2. Bleed the Low-Temperature Cooling (LTC) Circuit

    Fill the coolant reservoir to the 'MAX' line. Open the bleed valve while running the engine without a load for 5 minutes at 1700 RPM. Shut the engine off and wait 5 to 10 minutes before closing the drain valve. Recheck the coolant level. If it is below the 'MAX' fill line, repeat this procedure until the coolant level stabilizes at the 'MAX' line.

  3. Flow Test

    If the code returns after bleeding the system, use a flow tester (John Deere tool KJD10431) to test the cooling system flow in the low-temperature circuit.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the cooling system is clean, fully bled, and flowing properly, but the ECU still reads an artificially high temperature, the temperature sensor has likely failed. Replace the Charge Air Cooler Outlet Temperature Sensor.

  5. Clear Codes

    Cycle the tractor power (key off, then on) to clear the derate condition and verify the repair.
