John Deere 2630 – ECU: Charge Air Cooler Outlet Temperature High

Issue description

The temperature of the fresh air exiting the charge air cooler and entering the engine manifold exceeds the maximum specified limit, causing the system to actively limit engine power (engine derate) to protect the engine from thermal damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check the cooling system (specifically the radiator and charge air cooler) for dirt, chaff, or debris that could be blocking airflow

  2. Verify that the engine cooling fan drive system is engaging and operating correctly

  3. Check the engine coolant level and look for an air-locked coolant pump causing low flow through the Low Temperature Cooling (LTC) circuit

  4. Inspect the Charge Air Cooler Outlet Temperature Sensor (Manifold Air Temperature Sensor) and its wiring harness for signs of damage, corrosion, or a short circuit

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Coolers

    Thoroughly clean the exterior fins of the charge air cooler and radiator to restore proper airflow.

  2. Bleed the Low Temperature Cooling (LTC) Circuit

    Fill the coolant reservoir to the 'MAX' fill line. Open the bleed valve while running the engine without a load for 5 minutes at 1700 RPM. Shut the engine off and wait 5 to 10 minutes before closing the drain valve. Check the coolant level. If it has dropped below the 'MAX' line, repeat this procedure until the coolant level stabilizes at the 'MAX' line.

  3. Flow Testing

    If the code and symptoms return after bleeding the system, use a flow tester (such as John Deere tool KJD10431) to test the cooling system flow in the low-temperature circuit.

  4. Test/Replace the Sensor

    If the cooling system is clean and flowing properly, use a multimeter to test the Manifold Air Temperature Sensor. If the sensor is reading out of range or has failed, replace it.

  5. Clear Codes

    Cycle the tractor power/key switch to clear the inactive codes and test the machine under load to ensure the repair was successful.
