John Deere 2659.15 – ECU: EGR Mass Flow Rate Data Slightly High / Calculated EGR Flow Rate Slightly High

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) flow rate is above normal operating parameters, or it is detecting exhaust gas flow when the EGR valve is commanded closed. This typically results in an engine derate (power limited) to protect the system.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Delta Pressure Sensor connector to ensure it is seated properly and check the pins for corrosion or damage.

  2. Verify the sensor's circuit integrity using a multimeter or John Deere Engine Test Box (Power & Ground should be 5 volts, Signal Wire should be approx 2.5 volts).

  3. Perform a load and wiggle test by applying a slight load to the circuit and wiggling the wiring harness; if voltage drops out, there is a wiring harness issue.

  4. Connect to John Deere Service Advisor and monitor the sensor's input voltage and pressure readings. If the sensor shows a pressure reading when the engine is OFF, it has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the EGR Delta Pressure Sensor on the engine (typically mounted near the EGR cooler/valve assembly).

  3. Removal

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the sensor. Unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket/manifold.

  4. Installation

    Bolt the new, updated EGR Delta Pressure Sensor into place.

  5. Reconnection

    Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor and reconnect the battery.

  6. Verification

    Turn the key to the ON position (engine off). Verify via Service Advisor or the cab monitor that the EGR differential pressure now reads zero.

  7. Service Regen

    Start the tractor and ensure no active codes return. It is highly recommended to push the machine through a parked 'Service Regen' to clear out the exhaust system and verify the repair under load.
