John Deere 27.07 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine EGR Valve Position Does Match The ECU Requested Position

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a discrepancy between the commanded position of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve and the actual position reported by the valve's internal sensor. This indicates the valve is not responding correctly to ECU commands, possibly due to being stuck open, stuck closed, or responding too slowly. This fault typically results in limited engine power to prevent damage and disables the active exhaust filter cleaning process.

Check the cause

  1. Check for soot accumulation (coking) in the EGR valve and cooler, which can cause physical blockages preventing the valve from opening or closing.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the EGR valve actuator for shorts, opens, or swapped connectors.

  3. Using John Deere Service ADVISOR or a compatible diagnostic tool, run an actuator test to command the EGR valve open and closed while monitoring desired versus actual position data.

  4. Check for accompanying codes like SPN 2659 (EGR Flow Correction) or sensor voltage codes (27.03 / 27.04), which might point to an electrical short rather than a mechanical jam.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Ensure the engine is off and completely cooled down, as the EGR system handles extremely hot exhaust gases.

  2. Clean the System

If the diagnostic check reveals heavy soot deposits but the actuator motor still functions, remove the EGR valve and EGR cooler. Clean the soot deposits thoroughly using approved solvents.

  3. Replace the EGR Valve

Disconnect the electrical harness from the EGR valve actuator. Remove the mounting bolts and the EGR heat shield (if equipped). Remove the faulty EGR valve and discard the old metal gasket. Clean the mating surfaces on the intake/exhaust manifolds. Install the new EGR valve using a new OEM gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  4. Software / Calibration

Turn the key switch to cycle the power. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 000027.07 fault code.

  5. Post-Repair Regen

Run the tractor under a heavy load or initiate a Parked Regeneration to burn off residual soot in the DPF and EGR systems, as light-duty work often causes this failure.
