John Deere 2791.06 – ECU: EGR Valve Drive Circuit Has Low Resistance / EGR Valve Actuator, Current Too High

The controller has detected a short circuit to ground or an abnormally high current draw in the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve motor circuit. The actuator's duty cycle is operating above the safe functional level, usually due to a melted wiring harness, oil intrusion in the connectors, or an internal short within the EGR valve actuator itself.

   Trace the signal wires from the ECU to the EGR valve to check for melted wires or rubbed insulation causing a short to ground.

   Use a multimeter to measure current flow to the EGR actuator, check continuity in the signal wire, and verify resistance against OEM specifications to confirm if the actuator is internally shorted.

   Clean Connectors

   If oil or debris is found in the engine harness connectors, thoroughly clean them out with electrical contact cleaner and reattach.

   Repair Harness

   If a short is found in the signal wire (e.g., wires melted together), cut out the damaged section and splice in a new signal wire, or replace the damaged electrical connector.

   Replace the EGR Valve

   If the wiring harness and connectors test perfectly fine but the code remains active (indicating the actuator itself is drawing too much current due to an internal short), replace the EGR valve assembly.

   Reset and Test

   After repairs, use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) to reset the ECU and clear the stored codes. Run the machine to operating temperature and perform a functional test of the EGR system to ensure the code does not return.
