John Deere 2791.07 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Control Error / EGR Valve Position Error / EGR Valve Not Reaching Expected Position

The controller detects that the EGR valve is not responding properly or is out of adjustment. Specifically, the actual position of the EGR valve deviates from the target position commanded by the controller. This is typically caused by mechanical sticking (due to heavy carbon/soot buildup), a failed internal actuator/spring, or a wiring harness/connector failure preventing the valve from moving.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the EGR valve (Y5400) for broken locking tabs (especially on pin 4/wire 5423), pushed-back pins, or corrosion

   Perform a terminal test on the disconnected EGR connector to ensure proper voltage and ground are reaching the valve

   Perform an electronic actuation test using a diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR or TEXA) to see if the valve physically moves when commanded

   Remove the EGR valve and mechanically inspect for severe carbon packing or a broken internal return spring that could physically jam the valve

   Safety First

   Turn off the engine, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine and exhaust components to cool completely.

   Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a damaged connector (e.g., corroded pin 4), re-pin the affected wires and install a new connector housing. Reconnect and test before proceeding to valve replacement.

   Remove the EGR Valve

   If the wiring is intact but the valve is mechanically stuck or the actuator has failed, disconnect the wiring harness from the EGR valve. Unbolt the EGR valve from the exhaust/intake manifold plumbing.

   Clean Passages

   Inspect the EGR cooler and manifold passages. Clean out any loose soot or carbon buildup to prevent immediate contamination of the new valve.

   Install New Valve

   Mount the new EGR valve using a new OEM gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications and reconnect the wiring harness.

   EGR Valve Calibration (CRITICAL)

   You must use a diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR, TEXA, etc.) to perform the "EGR Valve Calibration" or "EGR Valve Learn Value Reset" procedure. If you skip this step, the ECU will not know the new open/closed limits of the valve and will immediately throw secondary codes (like 2791.13 or 2791.31 - EGR Valve Calibration Change Error).

   Clear Codes

   Clear the inactive 002791.07 code from the ECU and test run the machine under load to verify the repair.
