John Deere 2795.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): VGT Vane Position Signal Out of Range High
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the voltage signal from the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator position sensor is too high, indicating a short circuit to a voltage source (e.g., 12V or 24V) in the wiring harness, or an internal electrical failure within the VGT actuator itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the VGT actuator wiring harness for any signs of chafing, damage, or short circuits to a voltage source.
Measure voltage levels at the actuator connector to verify that power, ground, and signal wires match normal operating ranges and do not show a short to 12V or 24V.
Verify the mechanical VGT vanes inside the turbocharger are functioning properly and are not seized with soot or carbon, which can cause the actuator motor to overwork and fail electrically.
Repair steps
Repair Electrical Faults
If a short circuit or damaged wiring is found during the diagnostic phase, repair the harness to restore proper voltage supply.
Replace the Actuator
If the wiring is intact and the voltage supply is correct, the VGT actuator has failed internally and must be replaced. Remove the faulty actuator from the turbocharger and install the new unit using the provided installation kit.
Reset the ECU
Clear the fault codes from the Engine ECU.
Calibrate the Actuator
The new VGT actuator must be calibrated to the turbocharger so the ECU can learn its physical limits. This requires original factory diagnostic equipment (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) or a capable aftermarket tool.
Functional Test
Perform functional tests to ensure the actuator and turbocharger operate correctly and that boost pressures are within specification.
