2795.04

John Deere 2795.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): VGT Vane Position Signal Out of Range Low / VGT Actuator, Voltage Too Low

Issue description

Turbocharger position sensor circuit fault where the voltage supply or signal from the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) electronic actuator has dropped below the expected threshold. This causes the engine to derate, disables Active Exhaust Filter (DPF) cleaning, and results in slow turbo response, excessive black smoke, and failed regenerations.

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the issue is strictly electrical (002795.04) or if there are accompanying mechanical/calibration codes (e.g., 002795.07 for position mismatch)

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harnesses near the turbo actuator for damaged wires, loose connectors, or voltage spikes

  3. Clean any corroded contacts with electrical cleaner

  4. Measure the voltage supply to the actuator to confirm it is within specified limits (12V or 24V depending on the machine)

  5. Test actuator ground circuit, as poor grounding can cause a low voltage signal

Repair steps

  1. Address Wiring Issues

Repair or replace any damaged wiring or connectors found during the diagnostic phase.

  2. Replace the Actuator

If the wiring and voltage supply are intact but the actuator fails to communicate or hold the correct voltage, the VGT actuator motor/circuit board has likely failed internally and must be replaced.

  3. Reset and Calibrate

After making repairs or installing a new actuator, reset the ECU. The new actuator must be calibrated to the turbocharger using original factory diagnostic tools (like John Deere Service Advisor) to ensure it operates correctly within the voltage specifications.

  4. Re-test

Test the VGT actuator function to ensure the engine derate is lifted and boost pressures return to normal.
