John Deere 2795.13 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) Actuator, Calibration Error

Issue description

Triggered when the VGT actuator fails to reach its desired or commanded position during the calibration sweep. This is usually due to mechanical binding (such as heavy carbon buildup inside the turbocharger locking the vanes), a seized actuator motor, or an electrical/wiring failure. This condition will typically cause the engine to derate its power to protect itself.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes such as 002795.31 (VGT Actuator Fault / Position Invalid) to confirm the actuator is not in the desired position.

  2. Inspect the VGT actuator's wiring harness and electrical connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Perform a harness diagnostic test to ensure the ECU is sending the correct voltage and CAN signals.

  3. Perform a mechanical linkage test by disconnecting the actuator linkage from the turbocharger. Move the VGT linkage by hand to check for sticking or seized parts. If it binds or is completely stuck, it indicates internal carbon buildup or mechanical damage.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the batteries before beginning work.

  2. Address Mechanical Binding

    If the turbo linkage was stuck during the diagnostic check, address the carbon buildup. Depending on severity, clean the turbocharger vanes and internal parts. If carbon packing is too severe or internal components are damaged, replace the turbocharger or the exhaust housing.

  3. Replace the Actuator

    If the turbo linkage moves freely but the actuator itself is seized or electrically dead, remove the faulty VGT actuator by unbolting it and disconnecting the linkage. Install the new actuator and reconnect the mechanical linkage and electrical harness.

  4. Perform VGT Calibration

    Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as John Deere Service ADVISOR, Diesel Laptops, or DATS Echo) and run the VGT Actuator Calibration procedure so the ECU can learn the end stops of the vanes.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Once calibration is successful, clear the active fault codes. Test run the machine under load to verify proper boost pressure and ensure the engine no longer derates.
