John Deere 2795.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): VGT Actuator Fault / VGT Vane Position Invalid / Turbocharger Actuator Fault

The Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator is not in the desired position, or the ECU is receiving no valid information regarding the VGT vane position. This typically results in an engine derate (limited engine power), increased turbo lag, and the active exhaust filter cleaning (DPF regeneration) becoming unavailable.

   Inspect Turbocharger Linkage/Vanes: Check the turbocharger linkage (VGT vanes) for physical binding. Soot and carbon buildup inside the turbocharger can cause the vanes to stick, which overworks the actuator and causes it to fail or throw position errors.

   Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying codes (e.g., 000641.xx series for actuator temperature/circuit faults, or other 002795.xx codes for calibration errors) to determine if the issue is strictly electrical, mechanical, or software-related.

   Remove the Old Actuator

   Disconnect the electrical harness and unbolt the faulty VGT actuator from the turbocharger assembly.

   Clean the Vanes

   If there is heavy soot buildup, clean the internal turbo vanes and linkages. If the vanes are completely seized and cannot be freed, the entire turbocharger assembly may need replacement.

   Install the New Actuator

   Mount the new VGT actuator using the provided installation kit (gaskets/hardware). Tighten all connections with a torque wrench to OEM specifications.

   Calibrate the Actuator

   A new VGT actuator must be calibrated to the turbocharger using a compatible diagnostic tool (e.g., John Deere Service ADVISOR, Diesel Laptops Cojali, or DATS Echo). Connect the diagnostic tool, use the software to set the actuator's initial position, and run the automated calibration procedure to align it with the turbocharger vanes.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reset the ECU to clear the 002795.31 fault code. Perform a full system test and run the engine under load to ensure normal boost pressure and that the code does not return.
