John Deere 2818.31 – RPT, CCU, BCU, or ICC: Operator Presence Switch Not Activated
Issue description
This code is generated when a machine function is selected that requires the operator to be in the seat (such as engaging the Rear PTO), but the system detects that the operator has left the seat. If this code is thrown while the operator is actively seated, it indicates a malfunction in the operator presence switch (seat switch), the seat mechanism, or the associated wiring.

Check the cause
Operator Presence Switch Operational Check: Verify if the switch activates when the operator sits down. Listen for an audible click or use a multimeter to check for continuity changes when weight is applied to the seat.
Inspect the Seat Mechanism: Ensure the mechanical components of the seat are working correctly and are not physically preventing the seat cushion from depressing the switch.
Visual Inspection: Check the operator presence switch for visible physical damage, debris buildup, or disconnections.
Wiring and Connections: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors under the seat for signs of damage, corrosion, pinched wires, or loose connections.
CAN Bus / Software Check: If the switch and wiring are intact, use a diagnostic tool to verify CAN bus communication between the Operator Interface Control (OIC) and the RPT module. Ensure the tractor's control software is updated to the latest version.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and ensure the PTO switch is in the OFF position.
Access the Switch
Tilt the seat forward or remove the bottom seat cushion to access the operator presence switch (usually mounted directly under the cushion).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the seat switch.
Remove the Switch
Depending on the switch type, either unbolt the mounting tabs or twist the switch counterclockwise to release it from the seat pan.
Install the New Switch
Insert the new OEM switch into the mounting hole and twist to lock it (or bolt it down).
Reconnect
Plug the wiring harness back into the switch, ensuring the connector clicks securely into place.
System Reset and Testing
Turn the tractor on, sit in the seat, and engage the rear PTO to confirm the code has cleared and the PTO operates safely without shutting down.
